The uncertain future of a historic LGBTQ+ safe space: New York City's People's Beach
The summer season in New York City is informally marked each year by the hoisting of Pride flags on The People's Beach, a queer haven tucked away on the far eastern corner of the city's Jacob Riis Park in Queens. "When I was a runaway, when I had no community at all, I came and I witnessed something that I never even knew existed: that was a sense of family," said Ceyenne Doroshow, activist and founder of LGBTQ advocacy group GLITS. This has been a popular gathering place for the LGBTQ+ community since the 1940s, shaped by its beachgoers into more than just a spot to sunbathe and swim.

Did CNN's Biden-Trump presidential debate format work?
While this debate wasn't the first time the two candidates contended over issues ranging from immigration and the economy to abortion access -- this presidential debate saw the two candidates forced to follow the rules. Ahead of the debate, held in a studio at CNN's Atlanta headquarters, both campaigns agreed to a set of guidelines established by CNN, which included muted microphones, no live studio audience and restricting the candidates from consulting with their teams during commercial breaks. Biden and Trump were given two minutes to answer each question and one minute for rebuttal.

Biden's shaky debate panics Democrats, Republicans celebrate Trump: ANALYSIS
President Joe Biden's decision to debate former President Donald Trump early on was widely perceived as an effort to change the narrative in a race dominated by concerns over his age. "Obviously the gamble did not pay off," said one Democratic source familiar with the Biden campaign's strategy. Biden's responses, delivered in a raspy voice his campaign attributed to a cold (but only after the debate was well underway) were pockmarked by meandering commentary on his and Trump's policies.

Fact checking the Biden-Trump presidential debate
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump met for a showdown over policy and their records, but not everything claimed by the candidates onstage was factual. Inflation rates, border crossings, Jan. 6, abortion, the stock market and the cost to America of the Paris Climate Accord were among the issues the two sparred over that need a closer look. Did Biden inherit 9% inflation?

Swing state voters react to presidential debate, Biden’s weak performance
After President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump faced off during the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle, swing state voters were quick to weigh in on the candidates' performances. Dan Olszewski -- a self-proclaimed socially liberal and fiscally conservative Republican entrepreneur from Wisconsin -- said he was the kind of voter who helped secure a victory for Biden in his home state during the 2020 election. Olszewski said he supported Nikki Haley in the GOP primary this election cycle and won't support Trump after Jan. 6, however, he reached out to ABC News Thursday night to vent over Biden's debate performance.

5 takeaways from striking Biden-Trump presidential debate
President Joe Biden delivered a halting performance in Thursday's debate with former President Donald Trump -- raising new questions about his future in an event largely viewed as a test of the two candidates' fitness for office. Much of the focus was instead on how the 81-year-old president and his 78-year-old predecessor would handle another four years in the Oval Office -- with Democrats left worrying about Biden's performance.

Biden's biggest weakness -- his age -- on full display at debate: ANALYSIS
From the earliest moments of the night, President Joe Biden's biggest political weakness -- his age and perceived frailty -- became a clear liability on the debate stage Thursday. In a particularly low point for the president, Biden seemingly lost his train of thought while responding to a question about the national debt, pausing and trailing off into a comment about finally "beat[ing] Medicare." Donald Trump jumped on this flub when the CNN moderators turned to him, quipping that Biden had "beat Medicare to death."

US sends USS Wasp assault ship and Marines to eastern Mediterranean
The U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship USS Wasp and the Marines aboard are being sent to the eastern Mediterranean to serve as a deterrent and provide the U.S. military with options as tensions continue to rise between Hezbollah and Israel along the border with Lebanon, according to three U.S. officials. The officials stressed that the ship's movement is not an indication that the U.S. is planning to move American citizens out of Lebanon, but that it is moving for deterrence reasons similar to the earlier deployments of the amphibious ship USS Bataan and the aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford following Hamas' Oct. 7 attack against Israel.

Judge orders hearing to consider tossing key evidence in Trump classified docs case
The federal judge overseeing Donald Trump's classified documents case on Thursday ordered an additional hearing to determine whether prosecutors improperly used evidence protected by attorney-client privilege to secure their indictment against the former president. In an 11-page ruling issued Thursday, Judge Aileen Cannon wrote that an additional hearing was necessary to resolve "pertinent factual disputes" related to key evidence in the case. As previously reported by ABC News, prosecutors have relied on the notes of Trump's former lead attorney Evan Corcoran to support their allegations that the former president obstructed justice by hiding classified documents from investigators.

Biden falters in high-stakes debate, Trump spews falsehoods
In a historic clash of personality and policy, Joe Biden and Donald Trump took the stage for the first presidential debate of the 2024 election. The showdown provided a rare opportunity for both candidates to move the needle in what has been a stubbornly tight race for the White House, but at the end of the night, Biden's halting performance raised new concerns among Democrats and cause Republicans to celebrate. The debate was a rematch for Biden and Trump, who faced each other twice in 2020, but a first-of-its-kind format and a vastly different political landscape presented new challenges for the two rivals.

How much is Jamaal Bowman's loss a warning for progressives?
Progressive Democrats undeniably suffered their most significant defeat of the 2024 election cycle Tuesday when Rep. Jamaal Bowman lost his New York 16th Congressional District's Democratic primary. Bowman's defeat at the hands of Westchester County Executive George Latimer laid bare the nasty divisions among Democrats over support for Israel. Pro-Israel outside groups dumped nearly $15 million -- an unprecedented amount of cash -- into the race, fueling an avalanche of ads that knocked Bowman and promoted Latimer's own liberal bona fides on issues like abortion.
